Lime Pointing Workshop
25th - 27th February 2026
Lime mortar was developed by ancient Egyptians and used extensively in building the Roman Empire, it is steeped in rich history.
The 3 day course will teach you the importance of using lime mortar in buildings, you will learn everything from preparation, mixing, applying and finishing

Course details for people wishing to stay at the chateau during the course:
Workshop cost 150€ per person includes refreshments and lunch each day.
Room including breakfast 100€ per room per night (we have rooms that accommodate 2-4 people) for more than 2 people to a room there is a supplement of 25€ per person per night
Evening meal with Ted & Lesa 25€ per person per night
We ask that you commit to 3 consecutive days to ensure you learn the whole process. If you wish to stay on longer and continue practicing you would be very welcome.
Day 1. Arrival permitted after 15:00 You will be shown to your room to settle in. For the evening you are welcome to join Lesa & Ted for an evening meal & drinks (€25 per person) served at 19:00 alcoholic drinks are charged separately. Alternatively La Souterraine town is 10 minutes away with plenty of restaurants or takeaways available.
Day 2.
Breakfast is served at 08:30 and the workshop begins at 10:00
You will be given a section of wall which is yours to complete by the end of the course. You can work individually or as a pair. You will be learning the importance of preparing your wall for mortaring.
A light lunch will be served at 12.30
After lunch depending on how quick you have worked you will either continue to prepare your wall or you may start to learn how to mix mortar.
Finish 16.00 – 17.00
For the evening you are welcome to join Lesa & Ted for an evening meal & drinks (€25 per person) served at 19:00 alcoholic drinks are charged separately. Alternatively, La Souterraine town is 10 minutes away with plenty of restaurants or takeaways available.
Day 3. After breakfast you will learn how to properly mix and apply mortar. You will learn about the various finishes (Pointing, rendering) you will then get the chance to do your own mix and start mortaring your nicely prepared wall.
A light lunch will be served at 12.30
The mortaring process will take all day.
Finish 16.00 – 17.00
For the evening you are welcome to join Lesa & Ted for an evening meal & drinks (€25 per person) served at 19:00 alcoholic drinks are charged separately. Alternatively, La Souterraine town is 10 minutes away with plenty of restaurants or takeaways available.
Day 4. After breakfast you will learn how to make your wall spectacular. Brushing back has a variety of different techniques and the finish you require is down to you. You will be shown the different types of finishes which can be achieved. Hopefully by the end of the day your section of wall will be something to be proud of. Lunch will be served at 12:30
If you are travelling on this day, you can depart any time after lunch or if you are staying another night, you are welcome to join Lesa & Ted for an evening meal & drinks (€25 per person) served at 19:00 alcoholic drinks are charged separately. Alternatively, La Souterraine town is 10 minutes away with plenty of restaurants or takeaways available.

We will be providing all of the materials you will require, however for hygiene reasons we ask that you bring with you your own rubber gloves. As we are using lime, it is very important to use rubber gloves. They do not need to be expensive but do need to be long (half way up the arm) and durable.
If you have safety goggles then please bring them, however we will have a selection here for you to use.
Type of gloves required: Uvex Profastrong Chemical Protection Gloves
Everything else will be provided by us.
During the course, Tea and coffee or cold drinks will be available along with a light lunch.
